New Tunnel Under The Thames -- Working grouting cement into the cast-iron tunnel linings in the first section of the new tunnel. Beyond them is the air lock where the tunnel is being driven further along the Thames. It will, when finished, be over 500 yards long, and 8 ft in diameter, so that a man can comfortably walk along it. A new tunnel is being constructed 30 ft beneath the Thames at Battersea to carry power cables from the power station under the river to Chelsea Embankment. It is being driven through the blue clay by exactly the same method as is used by London Transport to make a new Tube - relays of men working in compressed air. November 22, 1948. Miners Return To Work In Shaft 20 -- An exclusive picture, taken by a staff photographer today, of miners engaged in reconditioning work down Shaft 20 at the Wonthaggi State Coal mine the scene of the tragic explosion into which the Coroner is now inquiring. A dispute between the Miners Union and the management held up this work. It began today following an agreement. March 29, 1937.

Gold Mining In Fiji -- A large stope in the Emperor mine, showing a scraper at work and miner operating a jackhammer and mine foreman inspecting the back.At right are crib sets of timber.Gold mining, the Colony's second largest industry, was begun in 1935. The two principal companies operating are The Emperor and The Loloma. Fijians provide 75% of the labour on the goldfield and many of them have become skilled mineworkers. Special attention has been paid by the mining companies to the welfare of their employees. Living accommodation of a high standard has been provided, extensive playing fields laid out and community halls have been built. The industry suffered a temporary setback owing to labour and equipment shortage during the latter part of the war. The peak year of production being 1941 when a yield of 119,000 ozs. was obtained. A splendid feat of railroad construction is now nearing completion in Syria. British, Australian and South African engineers, supervising an army of over 20,000 laborers of many nationalities, have carried out the work, which will link the important seaports of Haifa and Tripoli, and give an unbroken connection between Libya, Palestine, Syria and Turkey. 06/30/1982. The subway will not have deep tunnels, except for those that already exist, like the one above. The rest will run on the surface or underground but at a shallow depth, as in the case of the French Rouen, to the right.
